Abu Dhabi

Conservative Dress

I had a very strange experience last night. We have been here just over 3 months now and have gotten used to the conservative dress code. Even the girls have become accustomed to wearing jeans and long pants to school. I have enjoyed not arguing with Elise about her short shorts!
So last night we were at Yas Marina Arena waiting for the Linkin Park concert to begin, after watching the preliminaries of the Formula 1 race. I was enjoying people watching when all of a sudden I notice 4 young girls about 13-14 years old walking through the crowd. These girls were wearing extremely short shorts, tank tops that were 2 sizes too small and sandals. My mouth dropped. It was awful. Unfortunately Elise was sitting somewhere else with her friends but I told Sara to turn around and look at these girls. It was so sad, they looked, well I hate to say it , but “trashy”. It made me realize that we hadn’t really seen anything like that since we had moved here, and how nice it was not seeing young girls dressed like that. They looked so out of place! Even Sara realized how awful they looked.
It was such a juxtaposition to the beautiful women we see every day covered entirely in black. I’m sure these girls were happy to be in a venue where they could be wearing that type of clothing, because I’m sure like my girls, they are more conservatively dressed for school and in other public places. This was a chance for Sara and I to talk about people’s perception of you as it relates to your clothing.
I think we learned that less is not always best!

About Us

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

On August 1, 2010 we arrived in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from Melbourne, FL, USA to begin a 2 year adventure! My husband had been offered an amazing opportunity through work, and we thought it was too good to pass up. We had lived previously on Long Island, NY and had moved to Melbourne in 2004. 2 years in Abu Dhabi sounded like an experience of a lifetime for all of us!
