We had a great day yesterday visiting the girl’s school – The American Community School – known around town as ACS – home of the Sand Viper! The school has K-12th grade with about 1000 students. But they have 3 separate buildings for Elementary, Middle School, & High School. Surprisingly no school uniforms but they have to keep shoulders, midriff, & knees covered!! Hallelulah! But unfortunately no cheerleading here!
Imagine our surprise when as we sat down in the guidance office waiting area we noticed an FSU brochure on the coffee table!!! Elise’s guidance counselor is wonderful – he is an LSU graduate whose mother lives in Jacksonville!! He reviewed her transcript and helped set up her 10th gr schedule. She had to take a French placement test because she has taken more French than most of their incoming 10th graders! He was very excited about her interest in being involved in the school newspaper & yearbook so he said he could move one of her required electives to next year so she could take the Publishing class! She was thrilled!
Then it was off to the Middle School office where we met the MS Principal & guidance counselor. Both young American gentlemen in shorts & sneakers – very casual – not quite what I expected! But the teachers haven’t reported back yet so I guess they are still in the casual mode! They were both very welcoming and made Sara feel at ease. She will be taking Beginning Band and hopefully a Computer Animation class!
They have a new student orientation on Aug 15th – yes school week is sunday through thursday! The school was great about forwarding names & email addresses of current students so the girls could start communicating with them. Sara has already struck up a friendship with a girl from the Washington DC area, but whose parents are French & Egyptian! This is exactly what I was hoping for them!
